Malbork

Malbork, formerly Marienburg, is a city in Pomorskie Province, Polska (Poland) located on the Nogat River. It has a population of 38 thousand.1 Its castle is a tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 13th century ruin is really a complex of castles and defensive works, including dry and wet moats and ponds. It was the former headquarters of the Order of the Teutonic Knights, a Christian organization dedicated to the forcible conversion of pagans. The castle had fallen into ruins by the 18th century but was restored subsequently. In fact, many of the modern restoral techniques were developed in this effort.2
