Le Puy-en-Velay

Le Puy-en-Velay in the Haute-Loire Department1 of France is located within a kilometer of an upper stretch of the Loire River. As of 2010 it had 20 thousand residents.2 The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France includes two structures located here: the Hôtel-Dieu Saint Jacques and the cathedral.3 The cathedral is one of the starting points for French pilgrims heading to Santiago de Compostela. It was a medieval pilgrimage site in itself, and the cathedral was built at the location of a Neolithic dolmen (standing stone), whose fragments were used in the flooring.4
