    Palermo declined after it was conquered by a French warlord, who moved the capital of the Kingdom of Sicilia to Napoli. The island's subsequent successful rebellion and related transfer to the Kingdom of Aragón did not quickly restore its status, partly since local noble families fought each other for control of western Sicilia.
