Hamburg, Deutschland,1 is the center of a metropolitan area of 3.3 million, with 1.7 million in the city proper. It is located south of the Jutland Peninsula, where two minor rivers join the Elbe, which widens to form a harbor for the world's ninth largest port. Two churches, covered with green copper plates, are the most notable: Michael's Church2 from the 18th century and the ruins of St. Nikolai Church,3 with a 148 meter spire.
