Guimarães

Guimarães, a city of over 158 thousand,1 is centered in hills in the drainage area of the Ave River, in the Ave Intermunicipal Community of Portugal. Its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, honored for the building techniques it exported to the Portuguese colonies. The older technique, taipo de rodízio uses half-timbers; the later one, taipo de fasquio, all timber. The oldest buildings, from 950 to 1498, are of stone.2 The tallest building is the Hotel Fundador (183 feet, 2005).3
