The world's largest island is mostly under a thick sheet of glacial ice. The southwest coast is the warmest--even some dwarf trees grow. Oddly there is an ice-free stretch of north coast.
Less than a hundred thousand people live here, most of them in the southwest. In northern Greenland, the majority speak Inuktitut, the language of the Inuit. In the south the majority language, regardless of ethnic origin, is Danish. Throughout the colony, most people are Moravian Protestant Christian.
The administrative capital, Nuuk (Inuktitut) or Godthåb (Danish), is the chief settlement, with just over 10,000 people.
