Graz is located on the Mur River1 in southeastern Österreich (Austria) and is the capital of the Steiermark (Styria) region. There are 266 thousand residents, not counting the university students whose primary residence is elsewhere.2 Among the buildings honored by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site are the Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II, transitional between the Renaissance and the Baroque; the Seminary, demonstrating the severe architectural design of the Jesuit Order in the late 16th century; the scanty remains of the former castle of Emperor Frederick III; that ruler's cathedral in late-Gothic style; and the church of St. Aegidius, long the center of the Catholic Reformation.3 Among the modern buildings is the Kunsthaus, the contemporary art hall that has been nicknamed the 'Friendly Alien' for its unusual shape.4
