Genova (locally called Zena)1 is a city of 586 thousand2 within its province-level Metropolitan City of 862 thousand centered3 in the Liguria (locally spelled Ligûria) Region of Italia.4 It is a port city on a gulf of the Mediterranean Sea (on a portion sometimes called the Ligurian Sea). The tallest modern building is il Matitone (356 feet, 1992), whose octagonal shape is said to echo the city's colorful bell towers.5 UNESCO honors the Renaissance and Baroque houses (palazzi rolli) and 'new' streets (le strade nuovo) that were built in compliance with a 1576 senatorial order that private houses provide for state visits.6
