Genève (Geneva) is a moderately large city located at the western end of the lake that shares its name, where the Rhône River exits. It has a metropolitan population of 493 thousand, of which 178 thousand live in the city proper.1 It is a commercial city and a home to international organizations. The CERN nuclear research facility is in the metropolitan area. The Genève Aéroport is one of Europe's busiest airports.2 Its Jet d'eau (fountain) blows 140 meters high above the lake and is lit by night.
In the 16th century the Calvinist branch of Protestant Christianity was centered here.
