  • The only two European cities that topped 200 thousand in 1700 or 1800 that are not mapped are Moskva in the Central Federal District, and Sankt-Peterburg, which I group with nearby oblasts (regions) and other units of equivalent status. (Both areas are covered for other periods--just not this one.) Moskva started in the 100 to 199 thousand range and reached 200-399 thousand. Sankt-Peterburg started below 100 thousand (under another name) and reached 200-399 thousand by century's end. Its growth was due to it becoming the chief port and capital of Rossiya.
