  • The only European city that topped one hundred thousand in 1300 or 1400 that is not mapped is (new) Sarai, in today's Southern Federal District of Rossiya. (The Southern Federal District is not mapped for any period.) The city started in the 100 to 199 thousand range and plunged below 45 thousand by century's end, having suffered a sacking by Timur of Gūrkāniyān (the Timurid Empire) in 1395.
