Edinburgh

Edinburgh has a metropolitan population of over 700 thousand, with more than 450 thousand in the city proper.1 It is located in the Scottish lowlands south of the Forth of Firth. Its Old Town is dominated by the hilltop Edinburgh Castle, built in the 12th century, and the Castle Mile roadway, which runs between the castle and Holyroodhouse, the official home of the Scottish monarch. New Town exhibits the urban planning favored during the Scottish Enlightenment of the 18th century. Together the two districts consitute a World Heritage Site.
