Sŏul grew rapidly in the second half of the 20th century, first as refugees of the peninsular war came to it, later with peacefully caused in-migration due to the city's industrial jobs. As it grew the city and the metropolitan area absorbed nearby communities, which added to its size. Busan grew for similar reasons, particularly for the first one as it was one of two Daehan cities not conquered by Chŏson. Shenyang grew as an industrial center, first developed when the area was conquered by Nippon, but continuing until the 1990s.
