中京 (Chūkyō) is a Major Metropolitan Area (MMA) centered on 名古屋 (Nagoya), located at the head of Ise Bay, east of the Kise River, and on the south coast of central Honshū Island in Aichi Prefecture, ⽇夲 (Nippon).1 It has a population of 8.909 million,2 with 2.239 million in the city proper.3 The original city was built on plateaus just north of Ise Bay.4 Much of the city was destroyed in World War II4 but recovered to such an extent that the metropolitan area accounts for approximately one percent of the world's industrial output.5 The tallest building as of early 2014 is the 40 story Midland Tower (2006).5
