Chișinău (formerly Kishinev in English) is the capital of Moldova (Moldavia) and has about 660 thousand metropolitan residents (about 555 thousand in the city proper).1 It is on the Bîc, a right bank tributary of the Nistru (Dnister, Dniester) and is the nation's political, commericial and industrial center. It features an Arc of Triumph and the Nativity of Christ Cathedral with a bellfry. The city was once nearly half Jewish, but after pograms and the Holocaust, few remain.
