Chemnitz-Zwickau

Chemnitz1 and Zwickau are the centers of a metropolitan area in Germany2 with 1.2 million residents, although neither city comes close to a million. Chemnitz is on the river that shares its name,3 nor far from the Czech border. Zwickau is on the Zwickauer Mulde River,4 west southwest of Chemnitz. The most famous site is St. Marien, a church with an 87 meter spire and a 51 ton bell. The Hotel Mercure Kongress Chemnitz is still taller (97 meters). A monumental bust of Karl Marx in Chemnitz records the communist era.
