Campeche

Campeche is a city of 220 thousand1 located along the Gulf of México in the state of Campeche, México. In the late 17th century, the Spanish fortified the city against privateers, and the surviving defensive structures earned the old part of the city the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The honor extends to non-military buildings such as the 18th century Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción (Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception), the Toro Theatre and the municipal archives.2
