Besançon

Besançon is a city of 117 thousand1 located along the Doubs River,2 in the Doubs Department of the Franche-Compté Region of France. Its citadel, city walls and Fort Griffon (17th and 18th centuries) are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site called Fortifications of [Sébastien Le Prestre de] Vauban,3 military engineer for King Louis XIV. The citadel occupies 11 hectares on Mount Saint-Étienne above the city.4

The tallest building in the city is the Résidence Vauban, an 18 story modern residential tower.5
