Bellinzona

Bellizona (Bellinzone) is located in the Ticino River1 valley in southern Helvetia (Svizzera or Switzerland) and has a metropolitan population of 50 thousand, of which 18 thousand live within the city.2 The city is famous for its medieval fortifications, which constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These center on the hilltop castle Castelgrande and the wall across the valley. Integated with the defensive complex is another castle: Montebello. A third castle, Sasso Corbaro, is separate.3
