بيروت (Bayrũt, also called Beirut), the capital of لبنان (Lubnān or Liban or Lebanon), is located on the nation's central Mediterranean coast on a small, hilly, peninsula. It has a metropolitan population of 2.077 million in 2013.2 The tallest building is the Platinum residential tower (34 stories).3 The city became very important in the late Devlet-i Âliye-yi Osmâniyye (Ottoman Empire) when its administrative status was changed. The Beirũt Rafic al-Hariri International Airport is regionally important.
