Bamberg, Deutschland,1 is located in Upper Franken,2 on the Regnitz River, just upstream from its confluence with the Main. The city of less than one hundred thousand residents3 is famed for its old town, which constitutes a World Heritage Site. The original medieval town was laid out in a cross, archored by churches at the four end points.4 Besides these four churches the town is known for its cathedral, the Altenburg castle and the Town Hall (Rathaus) located in the river's middle.
