Assisi

Assisi is a city of 28,0001 located on a hill at the foot of one of the Appennini2 Mountains in Perugia Province, Umbria Region Italia.3 The founders of two Roman Catholic Christian religious orders lived here in the 12th century and UNESCO honors as a World Heritage Site the buildings associated with that tradition and earlier Christian buildings. The structures include the Basilica of San Francesco4 (started 1228), the Cathedral of San Rufino (started eighth century but rebuilt in the 11th), the Basilica of Santa Chiara5 (started 1257), the abbey of San Pietro (mentioned in 1029)6 and Santa Maria degli Angeli7 which houses the chapel of Porziuncola. Nearby are the monastic complex of San Damiano and the convent of Eremo delle Carceri.8

UNESCO honors Scicli along with other southeastern cities that were rebuilt in late Baroque style after their destruction by a 1693 earthquake.
