1600-1700: Africa: Exclusions

  • The only African cities that topped one hundred thousand in 1600 or 1700 that are not mapped are Marrakech and Fez, both in Maghreb, which I group with the Spanish African presidios. (The area is mapped for other periods--just not this one.) Both cities started in the 100-199 thousand range. Fez ended in the 60-99 thousand range, but Marrakech dropped below 60 thousand. Moroccan civil war caused the precipitous decline, with Marrakech losing its capital status in later 17th century.
