Wien

Wien (Vienna in English), is located on the Donau (Danube) River, originally on the right bank but now extending across, in the center of eastern Österreich (Austria). It is the capital of the nation and has a metropolitan popuation of 2.180 million1 with 1.757 million in the city proper.2

Schönbrunn Palace is honored by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and visited by many tourists. It is an 18th century palace and gardens, designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and Nicolaus Pacassi. The grounds include the world's oldest zoo. Its Great Gallery features stucco decorations and ceiling frecoes, and the Ceremonial Hall has monumental paintings honoring the former Austrian ruler Maria Theresa.

UNESCO also honors the historic civic center. The medieval buildings include: the Schottenkloster, the nation's oldest monastery; the Gothic church of Maria am Gestade; Michaelerkirche; Minoritenkirche; the 13th century Minoritenkloster; and the 14th and 15th century Stephansdom (St. Stephen's Cathedral), with 230 thousand roof tiles. The World Heritage Site also honors the Baroque buildings and the early modern buildings and parks along the Ringstrasse.3 Among the latter are: the Rathaus (City Hall); the Naturhistoriches (Natural History) and Kunsthistoriches (Art History) Museums from 1889 and 1871; the Parliament from 1884; and the Staatsoper (National Opera) Wien from 1869.

The tallest building is the 60 story D.C. Tower 1, although it is not yet open for use (as of 10/2013). The tallest in use is the 51 story Millenial Tower. Both are on the left bank. The Riesenrad, the world's second oldest Ferris Wheel also has a panoramic historic exhibit and an art installation of lights. Other notable modern buildings are: the T-Mobile Center, which has the shape of a 'frozen wing'; the Hundertwasser Haus, that artist's first architectural work; the the Early Modernist styled Loos Haus Wien, originally a department store; and the Art Nouveau styled Secession, with its laurel leaf motif.4

Wien-Schwechat Airport, located outside the city proper, is one of Europe's busiest.5

While in Wien, Kurt Gödel developed his famous incompleteness theorem, which set a limit on mathematical formalism.6
