Tunis is located on Tunisia(1)'s Oued Mejerda not far from the ruins of Carthage. Its medina is a world heritage site that contains the Great Mosque, the Aghlabid Ez-Zitouna Mosque (Mosque of the Olive) and the Dar-al-Bey (Bey's Palace), a composite started in the 10th century. The tallest building is the 23 story Palais de Congress. There are 700 thousand people in the city proper, 2.1 million in the metropolitan area.
