After the head of the Vijayanagara Empire was captured in a mid-16th century battle, the victorous sultans obliterated the capital, and only the village of Hampi and ruins remain today. One of the beneficiaries of the battle was the Sultan of Bijapur (now Vijayapura), and his city grew.
