Jakarta

Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia (in its own Special Capital Region) and the center of a metropolitan area of between 19.879 and 28.337 million,1 with 9.588 million in the city limits.2 It is located on a small bay and river mouth in the northwest of Jawa (Java) and rose to prominence during the 20th century. Its tallest building is the Gama Tower (63 stories, 947 feet, 2016). Another famous tower, once the highest, is the curvy-topped Wisma 46 (50 stories, 859 feet, 1996).3 Tourists enjoy the Grand Indonesian Mall.4

The metropolitan area includes five other cities with over a million residents. Bekasi (2.511 million) is located in West Jawa Province just east of the Special Capital Region. Depok (1.752 million) and Bogor city (1.022 million) are located just south of the capital region. Tangerang (1.799 million) and South Tangerang (1.290 million) are located west of the capital region in Banten Province.2

The urban area is served by two of the nation's busiest airports:5 Halim Perdanakusuma in Jakarta, and Soekamo-Hatta International Airport in Tangergang city.

The higher figure is from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_metropolitan_areas_in_Indonesia, citing the 2010 census and accessed February 14, 2017. The difference can reasonably be assumed to be caused by what settled areas are included. The metropolitan area is sometimes called Jabodetabek.
