Chungking

Chungking (Ch'ung-ch'ing, Chongqing) is the largest city in Szechuan (Sichuan, Ssu-ch'uan) Province, with a metropolitan area of more than seven and a half million. It is a mountain city between two rivers, with the housing at various elevations. It is hot in summers, hence its nickname of one of the 'three ovens' of the Chang River, and it is foggy when it isn't hot, hence its other nickname of China's 'fog capital'. It was the capital of China when Japan conquered much of the coastal provinces during World War II.
