Abidjan

Abidjan is a city of 3.693 million1 and a metropolitan population of 6.784 million2 located on the Ébrié Lagoon, which is connected to the Gulf of Guinea by a river well east of the river, and by a canal within the city. It is no longer the capital of the Côte d'Ivoire, but remains its economic center and largest city. The 'Plateau' features modern skyscrapers and the St. Paul Cathedral. The church's tower is a stylized St. Paul. The tallest building is the Tour Postel (347 feet, 2001).3

Grand-Bassam (population 91 thousand1) is a suburb to the southeast, at the river mouth. It is a former colonial capital and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tourists visit both Abidjan proper and Jacqueville (population 32 thousand4), a resort suburb to the west of Abidjan and south of the lagoon.5

The area's airport, Port Bouët, located southeast of the city's center, is the nation's busiest.6
